Episode 4 - Forewarning

“Ah, yes. A lot seems to lead up to this dance thing.”
“Waterbreathing, huh? Do you know how it works?”
“A chain is only as strong as its weakest link, and all that.”
“Oh, so that’s why I lost consciousness after getting in the car.”
“Actually, I’d like to talk to you. Can we go somewhere else?”

Now, PG13 continues.

Pardau looked wearily down a list. Finally locating the right name, she crossed it off with a little more force than necessary.

“That’s pretty brutal.” Jethro winced, seeing the deep indentation the ball point pen made on his name.

“Well, you’re already here.” Stephen leaned back in his chair, facing the table. Bianca was on Pardau’s phone, on loudspeaker. “So, do I set him up for training or something?”

“Yeah,” Bianca sounded exhausted, and Dave’s car whirred in the background. “Hey, about the photokinetic—”

“Agent Tamayo just reported back; she agreed on five days for basic control training and surveillance, then insisted wanted to go back to school,” Pardau said. “It’s understandable. It’s the start of her school year.”

“And it’s a science school,” Stephen said with slight amusement.

“So she’s there now?”

“No, but they’re on their way here. Olin says they’ll be here in a few hours. Looks like he had some trouble talking Jadee into it.”

“And I assume Agent Espiritu has the precognitive back there?”

“Silvestre? Of course. He’s already in the training room… But why are we training him? He’s a precog. You don’t make precogs field agents.” Stephen, Pardau, and Jethro looked around as Stephen’s phone beeped.

“He’s a kinetic precog. He can predict where an object will move, or, rather, an opponent’s next move. He’d make an excellent field agent, especially in hand-to-hand combat.” Bianca paused, and her voice rose octaves as she turned excited. “Hey, he might be able to defeat you!”

Stephen’s mouth thinned; he hit the mute button and told Pardau, “I have to get back to the training hall, Pia says she’s supposed to be helping Javi with an experiment… and she needs a break.” He stood up to leave.

As he reached the door, Jethro on his heels, he whipped around and yelled, “He still wouldn’t be able to defeat me without using his powers!”

Bianca hung up after Pardau gave her a proper goodbye, and returned the topic to her and Dave’s mission. “This is the last we have to check for this month… finally.”

“How long have we waited for the day that someone beats Stephen in combat!” Dave said excitedly.

“Without using their abilities,” Bianca reminded him. “Stephen picked up on that, you know.”

A few minutes later, Dave stopped the car. “We’re here.”

She opened her eyes. “Yes.” She drove away the ancient, creaky mutterings of the apartment, complaining about how it had been recently refurbished.

The doorbell rang. Andrei looked up from his thesis. Nobody ever rang his doorbell except for those insufferable door-to-door business men and that… pair.

Not again.

He slouched to the door and opened it. The black-hooded girl and the overexcited boy were there. Again.

Especially annoyed from no progress on his thesis, he snapped, “The answer is still no, I’m not going with you. I haven’t exposed my powers to the general public, and no, I’m not planning to any time soon, so I don’t understand why you two would come by.” Andrei shot them a glare and he slammed the door in their faces. When would they stop?

On the other side of the door, Dave was about to whine, but Bianca shushed him. “I want to find something out,” just as Andrei switched on the radio.

A few seconds later, Dave heard Andrei growl as he shut it off. Dave only heard Andrei shuffling around in the room and was already growing impatient, but Bianca closed her eyes and he knew she was reading something.

“What is it?” he asked, following her as she made to leave.

“Later,” was all Bianca said, but the fear and worry was apparent in her voice.

Kirby’s hands were already lit with small flames when Gene and a young girl with long, curly hair skidded around the corridor. “Issa!” the little girl breathed.

“Pia!” the augmenter acknowledged the girl as she morphed into her normal, adult self. Kirby gasped, and the flames flickered. “It’s becoming more difficult to hold him back. I end up needing more effort than I began with.”

“Why hasn’t it gotten easier to control? Isn’t that a bit of an overreaction?” Gene said, getting nervous.

“Don’t you think he’d be scared of burning himself and the entire building down?” Issa said sarcastically. “I’m guessing you’re the new recruit. Bianca said your powers match his nicely. Let’s see it.”

The temperature in the room rose ever so slightly as Gene started to panic. “Now?!”

“I’ll keep his power down, and boost yours. It’ll be easy.”

“I thought you had a hard time control—”

Keeping her right hand low and her fingers pointed at Kirby, Issa raised her left hand and pointed it at Gene. Nothing happened.

“What was supposed to happen?” Gene said. Issa sighed in exasperation, poised to try again. “Give me a minute, I’m trying to figure out how to do this again.” As she raised her hand once more, Gene felt something stirring in his bones. Something good. He managed not to say ‘wow’.

The flames on Kirby’s hand, however, grew stronger. Issa tuned to Gene. “Hurry!”

Gene’s hands turned a deep, navy blue, in stark contrast to Kirby’s flame-covered, red orange hands. Pia shuddered as the temperature dropped quickly, and the blaze on Kirby’s hands burnt out. Gene was very conscious that it took him a fourth of the effort usually required to manipulate the temperature; it felt wonderful.

“Keep the temperature like this for now,” Issa said, slowly returning Kirby’s power back to normal as he shivered violently.

“Very nice, Agent Gansit,” Pia said as Issa finally released her hold on Kirby’s powers, pride in her voice.

Gene exhaled quietly as his hands turned brown again, and the temperature rose once more. Kirby muttered tiredly, “Thanks f-for helping m-me. But I d-don’t feel so…”

The prodigy inventor dropped down on the floor. Issa knelt down and took his pulse. “Just unconscious. This is a good time as any to take him back to the Company.”

“We’ll need your help smuggling him out of the building, though,” Pia said.

“No problem. I can make an easy excuse.”

Pia’s phone rang shrilly in the quiet. “Hello?” She mouthed, ‘Bianca’ at Gene and Issa. “Yeah, we’ll be right there.” She hung up.

“What was that?”

“Bianca wants us at headquarters ASAP.”

Issa’s brow knotted in confusion. “Is something wrong?”

Pia’s voice gradually turned into a child’s as she said, “She might’ve found a threat to the posthumans’ secrecy.”

Arriving at HQ, Gene had taken Kirby down to Dr. Pascasio for some rest, and thirty minutes later had to bring him back up to the training hall for the meeting; Pardau said he was vital. The training hall was the biggest room in the makeshift headquarters, and all field agents had been called.

As Gene steered Kirby in, he looked around at the agents, looking for Pia, his mentor. He found her beside Issa, who offered to look after Kirby for the time being, seeing as how she didn’t have a mentee yet.

“Bianca’s not here,” Pia noted.

The person in question burst through the double doors breathing heavily, Dave right behind her. “Sorry I’m late. I was tracking someone down. Didn’t find her. Is everyone here?” She went to the front of the room while Dave hopped over to sit beside James.

With a huff, Bianca said, “Dave and I came from a check-up on a posthuman, Andrei Jimenez. For long, we have known him to possess… hostile qualities, but never to use his powers in such a way.”

“What’s his ability?” Kirby asked suddenly, raising his hand as an afterthought.

“Temporal duplication. He can summon and control clones of himself from the past, but they only last for a very short time. Because he is not an agent, we haven’t had the chance to gauge how long they could possibly last. His ability is similar to Agent Patron’s, but her own body changes to that age instead of calling a duplicate. By the way, welcome, Kirby Manuel.

“Now, I heard something in his apartment while he was yelling in my face.”

“Smoke and flash bombs?” The agents looked around at the doorway.

“Ah, Agent Cadiz,” the psychometric said calmly. “So my manhunt earlier was pointless. I should have known you’d come of your own accord.”

“The perks of not being an agent, Bianca. I’ll come by when I want to.”

Everyone in the hall watched as the new arrival handed Bianca a slip of paper. “Oh yeah, hand the blind person something to read, why don’t you,” Stephen said scathingly, rolling his eyes. Marianne shot him a glare.

“Printed out two days ago,” Bianca murmured, ignoring them. “By… a shipment company. What is this, Marianne? I’m blind. Still blind.”

“It’s the delivery receipt of an unusually large amount of adrenaline to the Caloocan area. I couldn’t pinpoint the exact location, but this should be enough.”

“What’s the big deal?” James asked, noticing how some of the more experienced agents turned edgy.

“Adrenaline is a hormone released into the blood stream when the body gets excited, threatened, et cetera. To a regular people, an adrenaline overdose can cause insomnia and turn you into a ball of hyperactive nerves. To a posthuman, however, an adrenaline overdose can lead to disasters nobody wants to think about. “Adrenaline overdose is most dangerous in those who have openly combative powers,” Marianne recited in a bored voice. “The most common example is pyrokinesis” (Kirby looked up curiously) “where the posthuman releases uncontrollable amounts of fire. To someone like Bianca—”

“—the whispering in my head turns into yelling.”

“In any case, Andrei must be planning something.”

“You don’t have enough proof,” Stephen said matter-of-factly. Marianne’s jaw twitched as the lights flickered and a low whistle sounded through the room.

“How do we know she’s to be trusted? We don’t even know her…” Olin said.

“Your boss trusts me.”

“And that’s a valid reason?” Stephen asked.

Before Marianne could come up with a reply, Bianca cut in. “If I recall right, Agent Tamayo, you were an agent from seven months ago?” He nodded. “I guess I’ll have to introduce you. Everyone, meet former Agent Marianne Cadiz. She was an agent until a year ago, after which she resigned from the Company for… reasons.” Bianca pulled up her hood instinctively. “I know her well enough to trust her. Even though it works only one way.”

“Hey, I trust you!” Marianne corrected, then reconsidered. “…Well, I trust the Company. Sometimes. Kinda. That’s why I’m here. I need your assistance. If everything works out, we’ll all benefit.”

“If what works out?” Jethro asked from the corner of the room. Majority of the new agents were still clueless about what was happening.

“Okay, let me start from the top.” Bianca ripped her gaze from the slip of paper. “Andrei Jimenez is in possession of smoke bombs, flash bombs, possibly a hefty amount of adrenaline, and an unusual personality.”

“In short, he’d ruin the dance.” Marianne supplied, leaning against the mirrored wall. “Back in third year high school, he had a crap prom, but then again, he’s a hell of a pessimist. Ybiernas Industries’ party is like a prom, and Andrei would want to ruin it. He’s just like that, I don’t… He was my classmate for two years. It’s indescribable, but… it’s something he would willingly do.”

“I found the smoke and flash bombs in his apartment when Dave and I checked up on Andrei,” Bianca said. “He bought them shortly after his senior prom. Quite amusing, really, how I found them so fast. They were literally yelling.”

“And this shipment receipt,” Marianne held the sheet between her fingers, “is proof. What would he do with adrenaline? Andrei majored in biochemistry for two years, he should know what adrenaline does to posthumans. He’s not stupid, you know.”

“It’s still not conclusive,” Stephen said determinedly. “There’s no guarantee that Andrei plans to use all that stuff on the dance.”

“What, you would risk being exposed? ‘Cause if you’re not going, then I am.” Marianne said, just as determinedly. “Once the posthumans are no longer a secret, we’re gonna be in trouble.” She turned to Bianca for the final decision. “There’s nothing to lose in being too careful. David—”

“—would go. I am too.” She paused at the mention of her uncle. “I set up this branch to help out the Palawan outpost, to cover while the Company is gone. We shouldn’t turn our backs on a threat, no matter how baseless our accusations may be.”

Digesting what she said, she turned around to face the agents, a big grin plastered on her face, contrary to her serious look a few minutes ago. “Now, who’s going? You have to wear a tux or dress, it’s all part of being undercover!”

“STRIIIIIKE THREE! BATTER OUT!”

Joaqui exhaled in relief as he released his tense pose, and walked back to the bench, removing his glove.

“Good play, Silvestre.”

He looked up at their temporary manager, who was handing him a bottle of water and a towel. He grabbed them gratefully. “Thank you.”

The manager stretched her arms luxuriously as he chugged down the water. “It’s great to get out sometimes. And watch you play.”

“Thanks for taking time out for me, Mika.”

“The fashion business isn’t that demanding,” she said, “And this is cool too, I got to be your manager and stuff. And we’re going to the mall!”

“By the way, I thought you were inviting that friend of yours? The one you designed outfits for, the CEO…?”

“Oh, you mean Rham. He couldn’t come, there’s this big dance he’s organizing. I think it’s an invention launch of some sort.”

“Well then, he’s bound to be busy.”

In truth, Rham’s events coordinator was just a little bit busier than him.

Issa wandered down the hallways of the fourth floor, looking for the right room. Rham had asked her to bring up Kirby, the inventor of the dance’s main attraction. He had conveniently forgotten that she was a temporary recruit and didn’t know her way around very well.

She peered into a room with an open door, and found an inventor she recognized. It was the one who had asked her for burn ointment a few days ago. He was sleeping; Issa wondered how he still managed to stay on par with Kirby’s inventing. Issa decided to leave him alone, making a mental note to ask if Rham even knew about this.

Issa found Kirby in the next room over. She pushed the door open quietly, about to call out his name but stopped in her tracks.

He was holding a blowtorch in one hand, and passing the flame over his fingers one by one, very slowly. There was no visible protection on his hand, but no burn marks appeared. The room was also quite warm, but the prodigy inventor wasn’t sweating a drop.

She backed out of the room quickly, processing what she had seen.

Finally coming to a decision, she entered the room and said, mustering as much authority as she could, “Mr. Manuel?”

The blowtorch fell from his hand and clattered down to the floor. Kirby made a show of jumping in pain and nursing his foot as he switched off the blowtorch. It would have all been believable had Issa not seen that unusual event. “Er… The CEO wants to see you in his office right away.”

“No problem,” he said, placing the blowtorch back on his brightly lit table, and brushing eraser dust off some blueprints. He stumbled out of his office sheepishly.

He really is absentminded. He’d forgotten to lock his door and I’m still in here.

Issa picked up the blowtorch, and pulled a Post-It note from the unused cube on Kirby’s desk. She burned the note, confirming the flames that had touched Kirby’s hand.

She hurried back to her office and picked up the phone.

“Hello?”

“Hi there!”

“Is this Dave? Why are you in Bianca’s office?”

“I’m waiting to get a new recruit. I can mentor someone now!”

“I see. Listen, can I talk to her?”

“Sure.” The phone switched hands. “Hey, Issa.”

“How’d you know?”

“Dave’s future was yelling. Why’d you call, Issa? You don’t usually…”

“There’s a new posthuman,” she whispered discreetly, glad that Rham had given her one of the specially soundproof rooms. “He’s one of the inventors in this company I’m in. You must have heard about it. The one hosting the dance?”

“Ah, yes. Mr. Ybiernas’s dance. It sounds wonderful.” Over at the Company, Bianca was smirking. Issa thought she sounded a little bitter.

“It’s actually Ybiernas Industries’ first invention launch. And the inventor is the posthuman.”

“What can he do? Frankly, I’m surprised he isn’t in our database yet.”

“He doesn’t get burnt. I saw him touch white-hot flames without flinching.”

“Sounds impressive. Do you want backup? Wait, no, stupid question. Disablers rarely need backup.”

Issa smiled, but there was no emotion. “You know, why not keep someone ready. I think my powers have gotten a little rusty.”

“Okay. There’s a new recruit that compliments your inventor’s powers nicely. This new posthuman may be able to do more than you think. Remember, he isn’t in our database. Be careful.”

“I think I can handle him.”

Eight months ago

Jethro went out to his backyard, ready to spend another day relaxing, and his wide backyard was more than enough for just that.

Fully equipped with a ten-foot wide private pool, spa , orchid garden, barbeque station, and several comfortably cushioned lounge chairs, the Malimatas’ backyard was perfect for hosting pool parties.

Which Jethro rarely held. He didn’t like parties. Too many people.

He settled into one of the lounge chairs and adjusted the umbrella so it shaded him from the sun. Jethro sighed in content, completely relaxed.

That is, of course, until the sliding door leading into the main house slipped open, and the pattering of shoes forced him to open his eyes.

An unfamiliar man wearing a casual outfit was seated on the lounge chair beside him. His eyes were obscured by polarized sunglasses, and his already brown hair looked even lighter under the sunlight. Jethro sat up, curious.

“Nice place you have here. I wouldn’t say so much about security, though.” His voice had a slight accent, as though some words were clipped. His sunglasses glinted as he removed them.

“Yeah, I’d think so.”

“I’m Stephen. Nice to meet you.” He extended a friendly hand. Jethro looked at it uncertainly for a few seconds, until Stephen lowered it, and muttered, “That never works.” He raised his voice again. “So, Jethro, I guess you’re wondering what I’m doing here, hm?”

“Of course. How did you know my name?”

“That ties well with what I’m doing here. Actually, I’m from a special Company. We take care of people with abilities, and make sure they remain secret.”

Jethro’s curiosity was instantly spiked. Stephen noticed. “Why would you do that?”

“Firstly, normal people would love to study them, hunt them down. We don’t want that. And secondly, we also aim to restrain abilities, should it become a danger to the posthuman or people around him or her.”

“Posthuman? That’s what we’re called?” The excitement was building up for Jethro. He wanted to learn so much more.

“Yes. What ability do you have? You said ‘we’.”

Jethro smiled. “Er, I’m not really sure what it’s called, but I can show you.”

He stood on the edge of the water as Stephen looked on. He decided to give Jethro the chance to awe him, since he already knew his ability from the database.

“Ready?”

Jethro jumped into the water fully clothed. He kneeled on the pool floor, and started breathing in the water.

He closed his eyes as he focused on inhaling and exhaling, totally mindless of the water, breathing as though he were aboveground. Stephen took his chance to roll his eyes while he wasn’t looking.

The excited water bug floated to the top of the surface, wiping the water off his face. “Did you see it?”

“I was going to tell you that I already knew you were a waterbreather, but yeah, it was amazing.” The last three words were as drenched in sarcasm as Jethro was of water.

“Waterbreathing, huh? Do you know how it works?” He climbed out of the pool and started drying himself with a towel.

“Nope. You can ask the scientists back at headquarters. My only job is to bring you back.”

Jethro’s hands froze on the towel he was holding. “I have to come with you?”

“Not if you don’t want to. But know that we’ll be keeping you in check, and will force you to come when you start flaunting your power in public.”

The waterbreather stayed silent. “I-I don’t think I’m ready to go with you yet.”

Stephen grew slightly annoyed, but managed not to let it show. “You don’t have to come. I can come back some other time.” Bianca, you better send someone else on this guy’s check-ups, he thought scathingly at the back of his mind. Freaking specials, eager one minute and reluctant the next.

“… I’m sorry. I know it’s trouble, but I can’t yet.”

Stephen rose to leave. “That wasn’t totally unexpected, believe me. Most want to keep their lives in order and totally ignore their abilities. However, I warn you again: should you display your power publicly, the Company will have to restrain you.”

Present Day

He scuffed both shoes against the ground, psyching himself up. Joaqui got into the position beside the strike zone that he was so familiar with, placing the bat a little above his shoulder. He nodded, and the catcher, pitcher, and umpire all tensed.

The pitcher swung backwards, and suddenly, everything slowed down.

Joaqui saw everything in red. The outline of the pitcher glowed a bright white, and the ball was a separate entity. He saw the outfielders and the short stops in the same white outline.

Just as suddenly, everything sped up.

He saw exactly where the ball was flying, and where the short stops first ran to. All of them were marked by blinding white trails of light, vivid against the red. He blinked, and suddenly everything came back in full color. The ball was halfway to him. Joaqui shut his eyes and opened them again, just as the umpire called “Ball!”

Lucky. Joaqui tried to shake his surprise off. He had to concentrate…

But I just saw where the ball was going before it went there!

He licked his lips nervously, and gave the OK to start again. The pitcher moved his hand, and Joaqui’s eyesight turned red once more. As soon as he saw where the ball was going, he blinked, and just as he anticipated, the world turned full color again. The white trail left by the ball was still clearly visible, burned into his eyes.

He swung, and it was perfect.

Stephen was sprawled over the lounge chair he had sat in eight months ago, hands behind his head and completely at ease.

The same door slid open, and Jethro dropped the glass of wine he had been holding. He cursed, the wine having been his last glass of high-grade Chateau Latour.

“I saw the effort to upgrade your security after my last entrance, but there was a blind spot over in those bushes,” he gestured lazily to the shrubbery behind him. “A chain is only as strong as its weakest link, and all that.”

“Hello to you too. So Dave told you about my decision?”

“Agent Llorin was rather vague, but yes. Let’s go, my car is out back.”

Joaqui’s team won the game, much thanks to his grandslam following his red visions. He sat on the bench long after everyone on his team had gone, still contemplating. His vision was now slightly tinted pink, with faint white trails of where the grass was blowing next.

“That was a really good game!”

He looked up to find a small, curly-haired man wearing a baseball cap. He seemed younger than he looked. Joaqui assumed he was a fan. “Um, thanks.”

“Your ability’s really something, huh?”

Joaqui looked at him in disbelief.

“I know what you can do. You can predict where things will move next, right?”

There was another trail showing the boy sitting down next to him. Sure enough, he did.

“I can see where the air blows the grass next,” Joaqui said uncertainly, referring to the grass.

“No, no,” Dave said. Aside from Javi, Dave was the main science nut in the Company. “The wind is an air. A moving air.”

Joaqui was about to point out the grammatical errors, but decided against it. “What is it? This… this thing I can do?”

“It’s called kinetic precognition. Really rare, too.”

Joaqui decided not to care how he knew. All that mattered was that he get to the bottom of this soon. He started with a basic question. “What’s your name?”

“Lawrence. Nah, just kidding. Call me Dave. I work for a Company, a Company found to help and hide people like you and me. Posthumans.”

“Post…humans?”

“Yeah! You can come with me if you’d like, I’ll show you the headquarters and everything. We’d love to help you, if you need it.”

“Um, okay.” Joaqui was more than a little overwhelmed by his talkativeness, but that was okay, since he hardly knew what to say. “How do we get there?”

“Come with me, I have James waiting in the car. He’s really awesome, you know. He can levitate!”

A few minutes later, Joaqui was sitting beside Dave in a heavily tinted car. “Dave, what’s your ability?”

“Oh, speaking of which…” Dave looked Joaqui in the eye, his eyes swirling blends of blue, purple, and black. Joaqui fell back in his chair, lightly snoring.

James looked back at them as he revved up the engine. “Oh, so that’s why I lost consciousness after getting in the car.”

Once again, Issa was walking around on the fourth floor, but now she knew where she was going. She knocked on the open door, and called out Kirby’s name.

Right then, Kirby wasn’t trying to burn himself. He was innocently poring over the designs of his newest invention. He wheeled his chair around, pencil hooked behind his ear and a pen-like eraser between his teeth. He removed the eraser before he said, “Does Mr. Ybiernas need me again?”

“Oh, no, no,” Issa said, adjusting her glasses. “Actually, I’d like to talk to you. Can we go somewhere else?”

Kirby looked uncertain, but he dropped his pencils and came with her.

She led him to a deserted corridor, rarely passed by people. “Kirby, I saw you using the blowtorch.”

He became nervous at once. “Oh, huh. Well, um…”

“Do you know why you don’t get burnt?”

“No,” he replied in a small voice, crossing his arms across his chest.

Kirby looked up, the interest obvious in his eyes. “Rea—”

The next moment, Kirby’s hands were ablaze. He looked at them in horror; Issa reacted instinctively as she raised her palms and lowered them, as if pushing the air down. The flames on Kirby’s hand slowly went out, but he could still feel the warmth beneath his skin.

“How did you do that!?”

“Power augmentation. No time explaining. I didn’t know you were a pyrokinetic!”

Bianca’s eyes were closed as she listened to the wireless headset, ignoring its whispers about how it once belonged to an animal agent (Who the hell even considers platypode to be agents?) and instead listening to the drama unfolding.

“I didn’t know you were a pyrokinetic!”

She took her feet off the desk and grabbed the pager.

“Pia, take Gene to Ybiernas Industries. It seems Agent Garcia’s inventor is actually a dormant volcano who just exploded. And that wasn’t metaphorical; he’s pyrokinetic.”

“Right away.”

“You never want to continue arguing when I’m winning.”
“But I know you. I know of your ability.”

Now, PG13 continues.

Jadee pulled her long hair back nervously, trying to calm herself down. She tried to remember everything she’d studied for the past two days.

“Jadee, are you alright?”

She turned to face Gab. “It’s another math exam. I’m on the brink of failure.”

“Everyone is! Cheer up.”

“Pat, that’s a really weird reason to cheer up.”

Jadee looked out the window, to check if any of the leaves were blowing. Some were, far off in the mini-forest, but it was hot in the classroom itself. The school’s main power line had shut down ‘for maintenance’ and the classroom was not its usual windy self. Jadee fanned herself with her handouts.

The class suddenly fell silent. Jadee, Gab, and Pat turned around to see why, and the reason was apparent—their Math teacher wasn’t there.

Well, the usual one, anyway. There was an unfamiliar male teacher standing in front of them, carrying a stack of papers and a box of chalk in his arms.

“Hello, class. Your teacher is at home sick, and she requested me to cover for your math exam.”

Some students groaned quietly at that. The teacher smiled, and so did Jadee. It wasn’t every test day that teachers are absent; the hope that the exam would be cancelled was always there.

“Oh, I haven’t introduced myself yet. I’m Ancer Villacruel, an art teacher.”

“So why are you teaching math?” one of the ruder boys asked.

“It’s just an exam, isn’t it? It’s not like I would be checking them or anything.” He smiled politely around. “No more questions? Okay then, let’s start. It’s best you have the most time possible for this exam.”

James’s mind was buzzing.

He sighed as he stumbled onto the rooftop. The day had been another long one…

He sat down beside the biology unit’s orchids, placed there specifically because this building was the tallest in the college. The wind, especially strong today, blew over them as James looked, ruffling his hair. His glasses shielded his eyes from the wind pressure.

The sun was setting. Its rays painted the skyscrapers and buildings a vivid orange—just like James always saw, whenever he went up here when he was stressed.

Today, he wasn’t stressed… just dizzy. He removed his glasses and kneaded his temples gently, trying to relieve the pain. James stood, and attempted to walk it off.

He stopped at the edge of the building and looked up. There was a chopper noisily moving through the clouds. James instinctively identified its parts. Hewas an aeronautics student, after all…

He looked down at the ground. From here, the people looked like bugs.

If only people could fly, aeronautic scientists wouldn’t be needed at all.

…Good thing people couldn’t fly.

A cat meowed behind him, and he jumped.

But he didn’t come down.

The cat looked on as the tall human flayed his feet wildly, trying to touch the floor again. When his shoe finally connected to the ground, the human collapsed on his back. The cat ran away with a loud mew.

James’s eyes grew wide with shock, and he said aloud, “OH, MAN!”

He fumed for a couple of seconds, annoyance and amusement etched into his face.

“James.”

He whipped around, and relaxed when he saw who it was. “Hey, Sandro.”

“I heard you yell,” Sandro said. “What happened?”

James opened his mouth to answer, but decided against it. “Oh, I just saw a cat and almost fell.”

As his eyes snapped open, he yelled as loud as he could.

The doctor beside him covered her ears. “So, this one has a really loud voice?”

A familiar voice laughed. “No, if that was the case, you’d be deaf by now, Gillian.”

“That’s Dr. Pascasio to you.”

Gene sat upright, and immediately felt his a pang in his head. “Can’t believe I’m asking this for the second time, but where am I?”

“In a containment unit. Just protocol. At least it’s not a clinic.”

The girl with the black jacket was sitting on a chair next to him, her hood lowered, showing her unusual, powder green eyes. He looked around, and the unit was empty except for them.

“I’ll leave him in your hands?” Dr. Pascasio adjusted her lab coat; the girl nodded.

Gene plopped back to the pillows in resignation, as the doctor left. “Come to think of it, I never got your name.”

“I’m Bianca.”

“Do you… y’know…”

“Have a power? Yes. I’m psychometric.”

“What’s that?”

“I can find out the past and future of things within a short range. The most I’ve reached was about a meter, but I think I can reach farther. The nearer it is, the faster I can know.”

Gene tried to measure the distance between them at the time. She laughed. He seemed to recall she was blind. How did she do that?

“Everything whispers to me. I hear them all, but I can…turn the volume up on a specific one, would you say. It’s different from mind reading, but it helps. I can gauge personalities from past events.”

“That’s…”

“It’s not as nice as you’d expect. I learn a lot of stuff that people would rather not have me know. It takes time to read through everything, you know. A lot of time. Ironically, the more people want to hide it, the louder it yells out to me.”

“But how come you can move around so easily? I mean, you told me you’re blind.”

“Er, psychometry too. The nearer it is, the faster it talks to me, remember? And from its past, I can guess what it is. It’s made me think fast on my feet many, many times.” She stood up. “It’s also the reason why I cover my eyes outside of the Company building. I look unusual. Either that, or someone comes with me and pretends to guide me.”

“S-so… do you have an idea what my ability is?” Gene asked, nervously, but also excited. She paced back and forth at the foot of his bed.

“Temperature manipulation. You can make anything hotter or colder. You’ve been on our list for a long time, but today was the first time it manifested. We had to get you before anyone else noticed. The Company aims to keep posthumans secret from the world.”

“I’m just going to stay here?”

“You can choose to go back to society, but you’ll have to stay here for a while. Control your ability, and such. You can opt to become an agent, too.”

“That’d be AWESOME!” He lit up right away. “You mean it?” The room thermometer by the door showed a slowly rising temperature. Gene struggled to lower it again.

Bianca listened to the thermometer beep as it followed the wandering temperature around, and said nonchalantly, “Well, of course. I think your power will be quite useful.”

“I agree! Hell, yes!”

“You’re an enthusiastic one. So, let me tell you first that I’m the head of this branch of the Company.”

“This branch? There’s more?”

“Yes.” Bianca’s lips tightened. “The Company was founded by my uncle, David.”

“Then why are you heading a separate branch?”

“Headquarters was destroyed a few months back by an, er, shadow manipulator.”

“Why doesn’t the rest of the Company move in with this one?”

“Uncle’s part of the Company is much, much bigger; we won’t fit. Personally, I only know the High Executives and some of the agents. The rest, Uncle won’t let me see. Even though I’m his niece. But our aims are the same.” She paused. Gene thought he heard her mutter, ‘and then some’. “Now, that’s enough about me. It’s protocol to pair you up with a more experienced agent to help you with things.”

She reached for the phone beside Gene’s bed and dialed a short number. “Hello, Stephen? Is Pia training? … Can I talk to her?” Gene mouthed, ‘A girl?’ She nodded. “Ah, Agent Patron. It’s been a long time since you mentored a rookie, hasn’t it?”

The class was already sweating, silently cursing the lack of wind. Ancer paced the aisles of students, peering over their shoulders and looking away when they noticed.

The first bell rang. Most of the students groaned. “Five minutes.”

And then, suddenly, inexplicably, there was a flash of light. It seemed like lightning in the classroom—the students gasped, but Ancer looked towards the fluorescent lights.

The light flashed again, less intense this time. Ancer saw that the fluorescent lights remained dim. Once he had assured that, he tried to calm the students down. “It’s just the lights malfunctioning,” he said in a loud voice. “Continue with your exams.”

Once he had finished collecting the papers, he went out into the corridor and whipped out his phone. “Bianca, I’ve found Jadee. She’s coming over to your branch, isn’t she?”

“Yes, Uncle is still over at Ms. Yu’s..”

Ancer sighed. “So, Jadee?”

“She’s, um…?”

Ancer rolled his eyes. “The new photokinetic.”

“Ah, I remember.”

“Send someone ASAP, won’t you? She might be a bit unstable after that shock.”

“Yeah, okay. I’m already here anyway.”

Bianca ended the call, and turned to face the expectant brown eyes of the man standing in front of her. “Ancer.”

He returned a blank stare. “Since you couldn’t see me—”

“Agent Ancer Villacruel from the main branch. He’s a teacher in Pisay Ilocos, asked by the Company to observe a student manifesting posthuman possibilities.”

“And?”

“He asked for an agent to take her back. Could I ask for Olin?”

“Isn’t he a bit too powerful for a photokinetic?”

“Ancer has his reasons to worry. I trust him; he’s more experienced than either of us. Olin is the fastest way, seeing as how our other disabler is at an invention company now.”

“That agent—Ancer, was it? He said the ‘new’ photokinetic? There’s another one?”

“Yeah. Candelen Dacalos, though her data is on a need-to-know basis. Their powers will differ, but not by much.”

She followed him back to the training hall, and approached a boy seated on the side.

“Agent Tamayo, you have a mission. Pisay Ilocos. Agent Villacruel will tell you the rest.”

“No problem.” He stood up and went to the changing rooms.

“Stephen,” Bianca said, turning back to her other companion, “How’s Gene doing?”

“Tired, as is everyone on their first day,” Stephen said uninterestedly, “But Agent Patron’s helping him, of course. How can you call everyone by their first names and get away with it?”

She smirked. “They never banned it.”

“Gene’s still getting over Pia’s power, though,” Stephen said. “You should have told him about her powers or something. Watching someone turn ten years younger is always scary the first time around.”

“Watching her turn ten years older is even harder. And he hasn’t seen Javi blow up yet.”

“Whatever. I’ll do it later.”

On cue, an explosion boomed right below them.

Stephen remained undisturbed. “Sometimes I wonder why they placed the training hall above his lab…”

Bianca went to calm down some of the newer agents, who had panicked. A soot-covered guy in a lab gown stumbled into the hall. When he spotted Stephen, he smiled.

“What is it now?”

“Stuff. I can’t remember. But it was AWESOME!”

Stephen scoffed, though still, he smiled.

“Bianca?”

A girl, taller than her by a few inches, approached. “Hey, Pardau. Where’ve you been?”

“Trying to convince Agent Sugay to get the waterbreather from Quezon City.”

“Stephen? He agreed?”

“Not at first, but you know him, he always takes persuading. But he agreed in the end, of course. He was the one who first talked to the waterbreather eight months ago.”

Bianca looked in Pardau’s direction, forgetting that most agents hated it when she did that. “It’s been eight months? He’s taken some time to decide, eh?”

“Javi was reluctant at first. Stephen too, albeit being powerless.”

“You don’t consider his taekwondo black belt to be a power? No one in our branch—perhaps even in the Company— can knock him down without using their abilities. Which is exactly why the Company hired him.”

“Agent Publico!”

She grimaced as she turned around to face an eager agent, followed by a sheepish-looking college student in glasses.

“How many times should I tell you, Dave, call me by my first name, please?”

“Oh, sorry. Well, anyway, here he is!” He gestured to the college student. “He’s James.”

“The flight guy, if I remember right?” Pardau asked. Dave nodded. “Doesn’t one of the Company leaders also fly?”

“Iego? Yes. But he sprouts wings. James doesn’t. He… levitates, more like. Ironic, actually. You’re an aeronautics student, aren’t you?”

“Yeah, I am. How did you know?”

“I’ll explain that to you, and everything else, in my office. Come along,” Pardau ushered James along, knowingly taking over his orientation because Bianca had already oriented Gene. This left Bianca and Dave in the corridor.

“How’d you bring him in?”

“Oh, he agreed pretty easily.”

“Because you hypnotized him.”

“Well, just at the end,” Dave said, his eyes changing color, from electric blue to vivid purple to a striking bloodred. Bianca, being blind, didn’t see its hypnotizing effects. “He was a bit reluctant to go here. Anyway, how come you never mentor anyone?”

“Oh, I did once.”

“Just once?”

“Yep.”

Dave waited for an elaboration, but she smiled smugly at him, daring him to ask. He scoffed. “You know I hate it when you flaunt your power.”

Episode 1 – Rebound

“Are all the invitations in order?” His swivel chair turned slightly toward Issa, though not enough for her to see him.
“Yes, sir. All 100 envelopes have been signed and sealed. They’re just waiting for the OK to be sent.” She sighed internally. He had a way of making everything sound mysterious. They were just invitations.
“Thank you. Tell the boys to send them immediately.”
“Right away… Mr. Ybiernas.”
“And, Issa?”
“Sir?”
“Screw formalities, you can call me Rham.”
Issa smiled. “If you say so.”
“Come on!” He swung his chair around, and addressed her in a high-pitched, strangely accented voice, looking entirely like a girl if not for his hair. “Sister, what’s the point of being high school girlfriends?”
Issa laughed, as she couldn’t prevent, even way back then. The whole class always did, no matter how often Rham pulled it off. “Ew, Rham, seriously, until now?”

Gene was doubled over, both hands on his knees. He breathed deeply, savoring the air in his lungs, trying to cool himself down… slow down his heart. The crowd was roaring, but he did not hear.
“Gene… come on.” That voice sounded so far away…
He looked up. A boy in glasses with a slightly nasally voice had grasped his shoulder. “The free throw’s on.”
It came back to him—he could now fully recognize the crowd’s racket. It pressed into his ears, cheering the opponent on.
It was hot. The gym was too small for the absurdly large number of people in it for the game, and combined with the fact that he was playing the last few, fierce minutes, it was certainly a heated game—in more ways than one.
“I’m coming… Emman.”
He walked over to the edge of the key area, and watched the ball go in. Of course.
Gene had fouled the key player of the opposing team—one that Gene had not bothered to take the name of—while he was scoring, and the ‘basketball genius’ , as dubbed by the media, still managed to score three points. He’d scored five in one go—the three points, and the two free throws. It pushed up their lead to twenty points, and Gene’s team was losing hope fast.
Emman and Gene were the strongest pairing in the district. The game should have been in the bag. But when one failed, the other did too. Gene was usually at the top of his game, but today he was inexplicably tired. He cursed mentally, wondering why…
He was wrong about one thing, though. The second free throw failed. He gained momentum from his legs and leapt up instinctively for the rebound.
He snatched it from the heads of the other players, and landed firmly on his feet. He quickly passed to Emman, as the clock ticked down. The supporters of their team, silent before, yelled in approval, cheering Emman on.
Then he fell on his face. He didn’t know what had happened, or how. Maybe it was the heat. Maybe it was the pressure of winning the game. Maybe… he was just tired.
The heat was all he could feel. I wish it was just a bit colder… if I’m going out of the game… that, at least.
And cold he got. It started in his palm, an icy breeze… he closed his hand and willed it to stay. He exhaled against the warm, varnished wood, and was subconsciously surprised at how chilly his breath was… until finally, he faded out of consciousness.

DJ Daway wandered into the gym, balancing a heavy, hard-bound book in one hand, wondering what all the fuss was about.
Oh, riiight. A basketball game. How boring…
He looked around, slightly annoyed. He hadn’t finished his exam in law school because of this din, and started to criticize the scheduling of events in this school mentally, until something peculiar caught his eye.
Leaning against the doorframe to the gym was a young person dressed in khaki shorts and an oversized black jacket. DJ wasn’t sure of the gender, but it was almost certainly a boy, from the way he held himself, and the swagger he had. The hood was pulled over his eyes and his hands were in his jacket pockets, as though the temperature was low rather than high.
He watched the game with amused eyes, though not seeming to cheer for either team. He just stood quietly, unmoving. It wasn’t too strange, in a college dotted with weirdos.
DJ had never seen him before. He internally debated about asking, but decided against it.
When Gene Gansit fell, the boy smiled and headed for the clinic.

Andrei had been sleeping quietly in bed when he started awake for no apparent reason. He shut his eyes hard and opened them once more, cursing the sun in his eyes. He really had to buy some curtains soon.
He glanced around his apartment. It was barely in order—only enough for him to get around and find stuff he needed, when he needed.
Of course, he knew his apartment well enough to recognize that something was off-place. He couldn’t quite put his finger on it. Maybe after some coffee… hey, what is this?
He bent down and grabbed a flashy pink envelope from the floor next to the door. He never received mail, save the occasional random stuff he threw away after seeing the sender. This one, though, he could not simply throw away.

Andrei kept a deadpan face on.
Who was this guy again? He rang a few rusty bells…
Ybiernas Industries, huh?
He tore open the envelope, and pulled out an equally pink card. Whoever made these cards was surely not thinking that neon colors make it hard to read. He squinted, and deciphered that it was an invitation to a formal dance, scheduled two weeks from today. Dates were not required, but encouraged… there will be a banquet… please wear formal clothing, which should not (he skipped that part, he knew that already)… your attendance will be much appreciated… yours truly, Rham Ybiernas, CEO.
And it clicked. Rham was an old college acquaintance. Not one he’d like to remember, to be honest.
He looked up from the letter. A dance, huh? More like a grown-up prom. Tch.
I wonder if he’d like a little present from me…
He dug up several black, metallic spheres the size of snowglobes and clutched them tight. Great, I still have these. I’ve been saving them for a special occasion…

“Now see here, I may look like a child—”
“Not now, Kirby.” There was a sure sign of boredom and sleepiness in his voice, even though they had just emerged from a heated argument.
Kirby’s cheeks puffed out, as they did when he was angry. “You never want to continue arguing when I’m winning.”
His companion tilted his chair farther back, yawning. His eyes were closed, ready to sleep, almost as though he weren’t in one of the most dangerous rooms in the entire building.
“Paul, get off that soldering iron!”
The tired-looking boy jumped forward, nursing a burn on his elbow. Before he could cuss quietly, Kirby said, “Not my fault. Go to the events coordinator, what’s-her-name—”
“Ms. Garcia?”
“Yeah, her. She has a first-aid kit in her office for emergencies… give the nurse a break for once.”
Paul stood lazily. “Which way is her office?”
“One of the reserves in the second floor, I think.”
As Paul slouched out, Kirby made sure no one else was around or inside their electronics lab.
Kirby Manuel was an electronics engineer for Ybiernas Industries, and had to work with scalding hot metals all the time. Being quite inattentive at times, he sometimes forgot to put on safety gloves in his haste to complete circuits.
A normal person would get a second degree burn from touching newly soldered lead, but the first time Kirby had unwittingly done so, he didn’t even notice he was touching it. When he did notice, he yelled, pulled his hand away curiously and examined the unharmed skin.
To make sure, he had secretly soldered some of the lead and touched it. It still wasn’t painful.
Yet, he hadn’t tried touching the soldering iron himself. It was a lot hotter than the lead, so he didn’t dare try. But his curiosity overcame him…

“…least he lasted long enough to pass you the ball.”
“True. Still, they won by a margin of 18.”
Gene recognized Emman’s voice. The other’s was a girl. But firstly… where were they?
He tried to raise his head.
“Oh, you’re awake.” Gene blinked. Emman and two other girls came into focus.
“Where—”
“In the clinic,” the shorter girl said. “You blacked out after passing Emman the ball. You were in a game, remember?”
“I scored two points, but time ran out soon after. I’m sorry, Gene.”
“No, the guilt is mine. I’m sorry I was so tired.”
“The game’s done. At least we’re still in the running for second place.”
“Yeah.” Wanting to cut the awkward silence, Gene said, “Monchai, I thought you said you weren’t coming?”
“We called it off,” the shorter girl, Monchai, replied. “Alyssa and I wouldn’t want to miss Emman’s big game, now would we?” she crooned. Emman adjusted his glasses sheepishly.
“You both did great, Gene. That opponent was just lucky,” Alyssa said in a dismissive voice.
Gene thought it was pointless to keep insisting that he was tired, so he said instead, “Hey, did you guys get a letter from Rham?”
Monchai and Alyssa laughed. “You mean that pink thing he calls a ‘formal letter’? He so hasn’t changed.”
“Well, are you going?”
“Of course! It’s Rham, after all. Don’t you want to know how he throws a party?”
The honest answer was ‘no’, but he didn’t want to give it.
“It’s also a good way to reconnect with old friends. I hear he’s inviting everyone he’s ever known from first year high school to college.”
“He is a fresh graduate. Actually impressive of him, having a company at an age like that.”
They chatted reminiscently a bit more, about the idiocies they did during the one class they all shared—The Life And Works Of Jose Rizal. Soon after, the nurse called his visitors out for being too noisy, then came in and took the pitcher of water he’d emptied.
Gene sighed as she left. He thought back to the match, and was thankful that they were still in the running. He closed his eyes, letting the game flood back to him.

Foul.
Free throw.
Miss.
Jump.
Rebound.
Pass.

And then he remembered. Collapsing, and that cold draft. He raised his hands and stared at them intently. Nothing seemed wrong. He tried blowing on them. Nada.
He thought back to the time when the chill appeared. He’d simply willed them to, because he was sweltering hot. Gene tried to imagine that again, and surprisingly, the sensation was clearer than ever.
Abruptly, the room temperature started dropping. Gene panicked, unsure if it was him or not. Almost as suddenly, it started going back up. He sighed in relief.
Someone knocked. He bade them to enter, glancing nervously at the temperature indicator again.
It was a small, hooded boy. Gene couldn’t see his eyes, but he could see his mouth. His smile looked friendly, but the black was contrasting it.
“I’m sorry to ask, but… who are you?”
“That’s a really good question.” He pulled down his hood.
Gene gasped. He was a girl.
“You’re surprised that I’m a girl, yes? Most people are. I guess it’s just the oversized jacket.” She plucked at it.
“Your eyes…”
“… also, always the second thing to be noted. Yes, I’m blind.” She grinned at him, looking pleased with herself. “Sorry, I like guessing stuff.”
“Okay, so…” Gene looked at the bizarre girl. “…um, do I know you?”
“Nope. But I know you. I know of your ability.”
He balled his hands into fists. “H-how—”
“Right now, that’s not really important. I’m here to help you, to help you control your power before it goes awry.”
“How exactly are you going to make me come with you?”
“Oh, that was taken care of already. The rehydration salts in your water earlier was spiked with sleeping powder.” Her bottom lip jutted out. “Trust me, I never wanted to do it. But I’m have to, so…”
Gene felt the first few traces of drowsiness. Man, the stuff they had was powerful. Waves of drowsiness swept over him; his eyes started drooping.
“Who… who are y-you working for?”
“We call ourselves The Company. But, hm. Maybe I don’t have the authority to say that. We’re what you would call a branch, really.”

Do you remember the series that Marianne and I said we'd be writing? The one where we have powers and all that?

It's entitled Pisay Garnet '13 (PG13, for short), and it's a spin-off from the original series Pisay Heroes (written by David Ples, Benny Almirol, and Rebecca Yu), which centers around 2011. I tried to keep the 2011 part of the cast to as minimal interaction as possible.

PG13 features all thirty of us, 12 with powers and 18 without. Don't feel bad if you don't have a power--I tried my best to place each one in the plot where you'd shine the most. And no, that wasn't an exaggeration.

Well, I'm currently in the process of writing the second episode =D> Yay me. Benny (one of the original writers) suggested that I publish our series after David finishes the final season of the main storyline, Season of Reckoning (yes, it focuses on Strontium), and I agreed, since I'm not really sure which part of the timeline our series fits in.

The episodes will be posted here, in this blogspot, and in the Tumblr that Marianne and I made. I would give the link, but it's still password-protected, so there's really no point.

OK! Duduy's dad went to PISAY and emailed the parents (thank _ _ _!) about the clearance..

What I don't know is the clearance for the dormers. I know that GRHA dormers are cleared, but Duduy's dad says otherwise. He said that only Jenine & Dave are cleared for the dormers. I tried to call, but no one will answer. UGGGHHH! I asked Camille Obrero (GRHA), and she said that GRHA dormers are cleared, she doesn't know for the BRHA. They've already asked Ma'am Agnes, but it's not sure yet. Could the boy dormers check on that please?

Now, the good news (ata)!
16 of us have clearances with ma'am toledo.
Duduy said that there are others who were not signed cleared, but with complete requirements. So how do we know who is signed cleared, and how will we be signed cleared?

Not really. I'm not at liberty to close-post this blog, since Javi is the ~~ultimate~~ maker of the site, and such. But this is my goodbye to being an author of the blog. Yeah, my name's probably going to stay on the list (unless Javi's really annoyed right now and kicks me off) but I won't be posting much. Not like there's anything to post.

All I want to say is thank you, Garnet 2013, for a memorable year. Cliche, I know (and yes, I fail at accessing those vowels with diagonal lines on top) but that's the way they are--applicable for a lot of things.

For old time's sake, here are some final reminders:

to those of you guys who gave their clearance forms to olin, you're cleared na! You don't need to go to PISAY tom or on Thursday, unless you wanted to. Our forms are with Ma'am Toledo na, so we don't need to present anything on the card giving day.

MONDAY
- teh big dai. We have to be at the 4/F audi by 7, because we're apparently required to watch all the other plays. Our play is scheduled at 1-2 PM, which is right after lunch break (I think) so expect a crowd :P Not only 2013 will be in the crowd, so will parents and teachers and upperclassmen who are so lucky to have free time on their hands.

To all the Comms--work fast, keep focused. There are some minor changes we made; we'll tell ya on Monday. ~~Better get to Pisay early or I will fry y'all.~~

Thank you for your work on this play, especially the actors. We really must celebrate our last few days together somehow. :'(

- those who need to attend Drafting to finish that final plate (which is, I heard, equivalent to a long test) the schedule is at 9-11 AM (?) at the Drafting room (duh).

TUESDAY
At 7:30-8:30, we have a film showing, something about the martial law, at the Learning Center. After that is the presentation of the SocSci election jingle.. at the flagpole area, I think.

Some Final Notes on the Play (1)

Sorry it's vague.

Our play is showing from 1-2PM on March 8, 2010. We go right after Topaz does, so we should be ready.

Rules on Make-up/Hair/Costumes:

Not too much. Only make-up for the eye bags and maybe some foundation, but absolutely no mascara. Other kinds of make-up can be used if you justify their use. And a note on application, please make sure it doesn't go to the cheeks. Use a smaller brush.

I noticed that while curling the hair, it sometimes goes back to being straight (lol, Issa ;p) so yeah, please make sure you guys don't forget the hair spray or whatever you'll be using. And of course, don't forget the curlers either. XD

DO NOT IRON YOUR COSTUMES! You can wash them (duh) but don't make them look neat.

We need to do something about the pins. Our actors are getting hurt. :))

The guards' costumes... May shoulder-pads daw sila pero walang shirt? Ang ewan. Please look into that.

No more extras (sorry, Pia). But I'm keeping the credit song and the dance number, okay? I know some of you don't agree but the whole thing is serious and I don't want to deprive Garnet of that bit of fun. I'm sorry to all those who don't want it, I really am. /vague

Experiment No. 6
Classifying Mixtures

Introduction
In this experiment you will compare some properties of starch solutions with those of a sodium chloride solution. You will also use the Tyndall effect to identify the different kinds of mixtures.

Objective
To classify the kinds of mixtures using starch mixtures and sodium chloride solution.

Equipment	Materials/Chemicals
1 filter paper 2 teaspoons, plastic 1 cent-o-gram balance 4 100mL beakers 1 funnel 1 alcohol burner 1 tripod 1 wire gauze 1 50mL graduated cylinder 1 stirring rod 1 penlight, 3 volts
	NaCl Starch water

Procedure

Add about 1/4 tsp. (approx 3g) of common table salt to 30mL water in a 100mL beaker. Stir until the salt is completely dissolved. Filter and set aside.
Add 1/4 tsp of starch to 30mL of water in another 100mL beaker. Stir thoroughly and place beside salt and water mixture.
Add about one teaspoon (approx 5g) o starch to 50mL water in another 100mL beaker. Stir thoroughly, heat mixture with constant stirring until boils and becomes clear. Get 10 mL of this mixture and put it in another 100mL beaker. Add enough water to make volume 30mL. Place beside other beakers. Compare the contents of 3 containers.
Focus the penlight on each of 3 beakers. Look at beam of light from the top of the beaker (at right angles to the beam of light). Note difference.

Exp. 5: Physical and Chemical Changes
Objectives
To distinguish:
⁃ physical properties from chemical
⁃ physical from chemical changes
⁃ mixtures from compounds
⁃ metals from nonmetals

To state the operational definition of:
⁃ a compound
⁃ an element
⁃ a mixture

Procedure
1.) Combine the copper turnings and sulfur powder and examine the mixture with a hand lens. Record your observations in Table 5.1. Transfer the mixture to a 10mL test tube. Heat the mixture complete. Record your observations.
2.) Write down properties of 5cm strip of magnesium ribbon. Hold one end of the strip over a burner flame using crucible tongs until the ribbon ignites. (CAUTION: Do not look directly at the burning magnesium. Keep the burning magnesium at arm's length.) Record your observations. Let the combustion product fall on a watch glass. Compare with original magnesium ribbon. Transfer combustion product to small beaker then add 3mL distilled water. Stir solution and add red and blue litmus. Record your observations.
3.) Get copper wire about 14cm long, 2mm diameter and form a loop at one end (see pic). This will serve as a deflagrating spoon. Spoon some sulfur powder, enough to fill the loop. Hold this over the burner flame. Observe the burning sulfur. Dissolve combustion product by holding the end of the loop inside a vial with 3mL water. Add red and blue litmus to resulting solution. Record your observations.
4.) Place 2 or 3 iodine crystals in a 150mL beaker and place this on a wire gauze and iron ring. Over the beaker, place an evaporating dish with a small amount of water. With small flame, heat crystals and observe what happens. Examine the bottom of evaporating dish after it cools. Record your observations.
5.) Put a few copper nitrate crystals into a clean, dry 10mL test tube. Hold the test tube w/ holder and heat gently in a burner flame. (CAUTION: Never point the mouth of the test tube at anyone while heating the test tube.) Watch the test tube for changes, periodically removing the tube from the flame to note any odor that evolves. When the heating is complete, observe the reaction products then Record your observations
6.) Put the sodium chloride and sand mixture on a piece of clean paper. Examine the mixture w/ magnifying glass. Record your observations. Transfer the mixture to a clean 150mL beaker. Add 30mL of distilled water and stir the mixture with a glass rod.
Filter the mixture: fold a piece of filter paper in half and fold again so that the edges do not meet but form an angle of abt 5-10 degrees
Place evaporating dish below the funnel, and pour the salt/sand/water mixture into the funnel. The liquid that passes through the filter paper is called the filtrate. Heat the dish gently until filtrate has evaporated completely. Allow dish to cool. Examine dry residue in evaporating dish and wet residue on filter paper. Record your observations. Throw evaporating dish together w/ the sand.
Submit dry residue to teacher.

Okay, so about the fair...
Sabi ng FairCom na hindi pwede ang 2+ hours na shift. So if you guys have an extra long shift... You can ask whoever is in charge about it.
I left before they set up the booth and all, pero I remember (just in case the booth isn't set up yet):
- try bringing yung mga table. pwede raw manghiram sa ASTB pero dapat may permission and collateral.
- kailangan natin ng cashbox and a notebook or something like that to keep track.
- we're working right beside the jail booth kasi we can't really catch anyone daw :)) kind of true
- Jade has make-up classes so I think Garnet will pull the majority of the shifts tomorrow. Not sure yet.

By the way, the tickets are with Gene. He'll distribute them tomorrow

All revisions must be with me by Tuesday, Feb. 10. This gives you ample time to write, edit, rewrite, and have one final edit.

I’ll give the final edits to Pia on Thursday, Feb. 12. And the rest will be discussed by Pia, Alyssa, and me.

NOTES

Follow what your editors say. (But Editors, don’t abuse.) If they give a format or give deadlines, follow.
Editors, be responsible. Make sure everyone submits on time and make sure you submit on time.
Keep a soft copy and a hard copy for every article you write. Layouting will be hard and will take long for Pia if she still has to type everything.
There is no specified length for the articles, but minimum should be roughly as long as THIS ENTRY > click! Sorry, okay, my head hurts too much to make another entry. The articles will be cropped and prolonged as the layout calls for.
If you want to pass extra articles for other portions, that's perfectly fine, just pass to the correct editor.

So Pia has been asking for picture submissions...
And since I'm assistant editor for Reviews, I'm telling you all that Deadline is on Sunday (Feb 7, 2010) at 12PM because I still have to check all the reviews.
Now I'm taking Bianca's advice and I won't put any strict format rules... But if you're sending a soft copy to me ( rawr.imallama@yahoo.com ) then PLEASE save it as .doc or .docx or .odt and make sure the font is readable.
And do a little background check on the book/movie/whatever you're reviewing. This means: if you're reviewing a book, please tell us who the author is, and if it's a movie tell us who the director is. Kawawa naman yung mga direktor sa mundo, walang credit XD
Plus include genre and of course, your rating (3 stars? 4 stars? what?)

NO SPOILERS! that's a rule.

^^ If it's a movie, please include the names of some actors with major roles.
- I highly suggest you avoid reviewing well known books/movies/etc and try to introduce us to something new :) This isn't for cramming, so if you're gonna write a half-assed article then it's not gonna be included.
- Don't just say 'this book/movie/etc sucks. it's so crappy. i hate it.' because that doesn't help much. If you like/hate it, then TELL US WHY. What makes it good/bad?

After ATs (O_O whut?), I should've had edited everything, and given Pia the articles and everything to layout. Pia, you have until the Monday after Fair (which is ASP LT day, so go read it naoooo) to layout.

Alyssa's father's publishing company will print the magazines for us, if it's a bulk order. We're not sure of this yet 'cause we don't have the number of pages yet or the number of orders (wanna distribute to the whole Pisay? :P) so it might be this publishing company or the one that Pia speaks of. Mmkay?

Consent forms for STARGAZING and SOCSCI INTRAMUROS TRIP. The latter was due on Friday, I think.

Flite kying! :D The revised schedule was on the IS board earlier :V I just gathered that the elims is Tuesday, finals is Thursday. I have no idea. Let's ask on Monday na lang. And I asked Sir Llaguno and he says to bring the kites on Tuesday.

Exhibits. Setup at the IS room, and there are corresponding tables for each kinda project. Except for the MTVs, pass them at the Physics unit. Even incomplete projects are supposed to be resting quietly in the IS room now; Ma'am Toledo said we could still put finishing touches by Monday.

Bring your copy of the YMSAT sked. For every activity, we have to make the overseeing teacher sign. On that note, bring a pen. I have no idea what else to bring.

Everyone who's attending the ES hands-on: bring a 1.5 PET bottle. I assume you know what that is -_- And for those in Bio and Chem (citation needed), bring a lab gown.

Hi guys. As director, I'll be in charge of holding try-outs and assigning understudies for the actors. And other stuff like that.

If you guys want to schedule a try-out then just contact me. You can look for me in the front lob/front lob stone benches/in line at the caf/classroom/library during free periods.
Now about some of you that still want to play parts but were beat by better actors :)) (kidding), you can try-out for understudy.
An understudy is basically like a reserve, or a back-up. Just in case so-or-so is sick or absent.
I'm available during the first half of the fourth period, and during other free periods (unless I say so). You can also schedule for after classes (except Friday, because the VM has a meeting).
Schedule a try-out ASAP, if you want, okay? The scheduling of the try-outs are until Friday. Try-outs can be scheduled until next week, Wednesday.

Just want you guys to submit songs you want for Music. Submit a maximum 5 songs, then we'll try to agree on a song based on how easy it is to play on guitar, if a recorder can play it, how long it is, and how fast it is... And other things.

Monchai already suggested "Jump Then Fall" by Taylor Swift.
PROS:

The guitar chords are easy (according to Bianca).

We believe it is within the range of a recorder.

We can... There are probably more pros but I can't think of any :D

CONS

It's kinda long (around 4 minutes) and upbeat-- kawawa naman yung na-assign sa recorder

The strumming is hard. (according to Bianca).

Too high for us to sing some parts.

Some of the boys might not agree kasi it's kind of a girly song :) Not saying that Taylor Swift is only for girls, but you get my point

I suggested "Hallelujah" covered by Bon Jovi.
PROS:

It's slow enough to play easily with recorder, and it's within the range of the recorder.

It's okay on guitar.

It's low enough for us to sing.

My sister says the play will probably be on late January, but I doubt that 'cause late January is YMSAT week and we'd be too busy for that. So maybe early to mid-February.

That means only ONE MONTH, give or take, to practice. I just posted to remind you guys that we still have a play xp

I'm going to talk to Ma'am Sagucio about the script, so we can start casting right away. I mean RIGHT AWAY. ~~Yeah, I sound evil. >:D~~

I don't know. I'm just so excited for the play. I want us to do well. I mean, the plot's good and all. And this is another class thing. Maybe as fun as softball. :P

My dad thinks it's best for me to resign (translation: my dad is forcing me to resign), and I think I should, because I don't think I can handle losing and paying back big amounts of money. ~~But I still like getting things photocopied and giving it to all you guys, so I'm trying to find a way so someone else can handle the money.~~

Noun Clauses

Introduced to a sentence using the words who, whose, whoever, what, whatever and in some cases, how, that, where, why.
If you are unsure whether or not it is a noun clause, try substituting a pronoun/noun where the noun clause should be.
They function as nouns, and can be

Subject
Whatever was in his pocket kicked me.
He kicked me.
Subjective Complement
Vandalism from Javi:

2. I am whatever I want to be.
Direct Object
Jethro ate whatever was in his hand.
Jethro ate a banana.
Indirect Object
Andrei gave wilted flowers to whoever owned them.
Andrei gave wilted flowers to the bees.

The gift is from whoever ate Howakee and Mika.
The gift is from Monchai.

Adjective Clauses

These function as adjectives and modify nouns/pronouns/noun clauses. They're introduced by relative pronouns. There are certain relative pronouns for certain adjective clauses.

For Persons: who, whoever, whom
For Things/Animals: that, which
Time/Events: when, whenever
Places: where, wherever

Again, to check if they work, try removing the adjective clause then put an adjective before the word it modifies.
If the adjective clause is at the start of the sentence, It should work.
1.) The man who eats barnacles should not die.
The crazy man should not die.
2.) Bottles that are made of plastic should be thrown in the proper bins.
Plastic bottles should be thrown in the proper bins.
3.) The time when you think you're ready is when we leave.
The right time is when we leave.
4.) The room where you were born is inhabited by monkeys.
The pink room is inhabited by monkeys.

Adverbial Clauses

Function as adverbs, which means they can modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs.
THEY CANNOT MODIFY NOUNS so please, when asked to identify modified word/group of words, it's NOT THE NOUN!

Time
They answer "when".
Before my monkey got lost, I was happy.
^^ Modifies happy
I became sad when my monkey got lost.
^^Modifies sad, I think
Manner
They answer "how".
Indie **talked** as if she would never talk again.
Indie **ran** as though someone was chasing her.
**words are the modified words**
Place
They answer "where".
Indie **went** where she had to go.
Reason
I ate the cookies since nobody told me they were hers.
^^ modifies 'ate'
I closed the bar because I was tired.
^^modifies 'closed'
Purpose
I wore black so that I would be near invisible in the dark.
^^modifies 'wore'
This is different from Reason because Purpose gives the intention, and Reason justifies it.
Condition
Expresses hypothetical consequences ("or else"), or lay down premises which must be agreed upon by specific party.
I will not eat the cookies unless you eat my donuts.
I will clean your room, provided that you supply me with nuclear weapons.
Concession
Shows an unexpected/contrasting idea, against the other idea in the sentence.
Even if I ate already, I ate some more rice.
I resorted to drugs, even though I knew they were bad.

WTF? Voices?

The sentence can be in active or passive voice-- or just plain intransitive. A sentence in the active voice has the subject as the do-er of the action. In passive, the subject is the receiver of the action.
In intransitive sentences, there is no receiver of the action so it can't be active or passive.
